Happy Hour: Pisco Old Fashioned

Photograph by Daniel Montoya

If you’re not familiar with Pisco, it’s a Peruvian brandy. This ultra premium white spirit is made from grapes that aren’t completely fermented, which gives it it’s distinct fruit taste and aroma. Judy, our mix master from St. Felix, says her brand of choice is Portón, which has 15 pounds of grapes in each bottle. Try this sipper at your next cocktail party— its inspired by the classic, but with a twist that you and your guests will love.

RECIPE: Pisco Old Fashioned

Yields 1 cocktail

  • 2 oz Pisco (Judy recommends Portón)
  • 2 dashes of grapefruit bitters
  • 2 dashes of angostura bitters
  • Peel slice of orange
  • Peel slice of grapefruit
  • ½ oz. simple syrup

  1. In a chilled Old Fashioned (rocks) glass, combine the ½ oz simple syrup, then add the two kinds of bitters.
  2. Combine all the ingredients in a chilled Old Fashioned (rocks) glass
  3. Smash ice with back of bar spoon
  4. Peel an orange and a grapefruit with a vegetable peeler.
  5. Squeeze the zest over the glass to release the oils in the glass. Then, carefully hold a match over the zest for a few seconds and rim the glass with the orange zest.
  6. Stir with bar spoon for 10 seconds, clockwise- be sure to hold the bar of the bar spoon parallel to the side of the glass while stirring
  7. Serve with a orange zest and grapefruit zest
