We moms have no free time. Our days are filled with pick-ups, drop-offs, bath time, meal time, homework, cleaning up, diapers — the list is endless.
So, whenever someone suggests I take some time for myself, I pretty much laugh in their faces. Who has time for that? But there are a few little things I do for myself that bring a smile to my chaotic, hectic days. The one tiny respite in a hurricane of busy.
Here are 5 things you can do for you, guaranteed to bring a smile to your face:
1. Eat a Hershey’s Kiss
Sometimes we moms just need a little sweetness. And, yes, I know you’re still trying to lose that baby weight. (My youngest is 3, and I’m still trying to lose the baby weight.) But a Hershey’s Kiss only has 22 calories. Just one will add a little sweetness to your day. Heck, go for it — have four! And then with the extra ones? They make the perfect little surprise in your child’s lunchbox!
All of that leaning over into a crib, sitting at a desk working and bending down for the laundry can really do a number on your back. Add picking up your big one and lack of sleep to the list, and some days I feel more like a pretzel than actual human. Try a few simple stretches throughout the day to make your back feel better. These stretches from FitSugar really work for me. Just figure out what’s bothering you most, do a quick internet search and you can find a video that walks you through your perfect stretches.
3. Take a bath
After you get the kids to bed, sneak in a little bath. Sounds indulgent, doesn’t it? But, really, it’s good for you. The warm water will relax you and get you ready for a good night’s sleep (that is, until your kiddies wake you in the middle of the night).
4. Put on makeup
I know it sounds silly, but somehow getting yourself all gussied up can do wonders for your attitude. Just a little concealer and blush is all you need. You feel more like yourself, more powerful, like you can conquer the world. No? Okay, at the very least, you’ll feel prettier as you go about your day. And who doesn’t like to feel pretty?
5. Indulge in perfume
I love putting on a spritz of perfume. I don’t do it every day because of the kids, but when I do put it on, it can transform my mood. Suddenly, I feel sexier, more adult. I’m not just “mommy” anymore. I’m an actual person. If you don’t have the cash to spend on a bottle of perfume? Go to the closest department store and sample their wares. I recently went into a department store and the salesperson (seeing my bedraggled, sad mommy appearance, no doubt) gave me a deluxe sample of a perfume that I expressed interest in. For the following two weeks, I gave myself a little spray in the morning and felt great all day.
