How To Make Pom Poms

Photograph by Daniel Montoya

Making cute decorative pom poms is easier than you think. Follow our how-to guide and you'll find yourself as obsessed with the yarn-based puffballs as much as we are.

1. Wrap string around your hand multiple times until it's significantly thick. The thicker it is, the more dense your pom pom will be so don't be timid to wrap it more than you think you should. Cut the string when you are finished, leaving the loose end as part of the looped yarn (no need to secure it).

2. Scrunch the yarn together

3. Slide it off your hand, maintaining the interior loop with a finger or thumb.

4. Taking a separate piece of yarn, tie a knot across the center of the loop. Double knot the yarn.

5. Cut the loops with a pair of sharp scissors. This is what forms the end of your pom pom.

6. Trim the ends of the string, making them even. The shorter you cut them, the tighter the pom pom will be, while the longer you leave the ends, the more long-haired your pom pom will be.

7. Using the remaining string that you used to tie the pom pom, attach to anything you want from presents to headbands.
