For moms, being part-time is, by itself, an advantage over full-time positions because it offers you more time at home with your baby. You might even be able to work your hours around those of your partner so your childcare expenses are kept at a minimum.
Finding the right part-time job doesn't necessarily mean looking in a new direction. Think back to your last position. Even if it was full-time, it may still be a viable option, says Colleen Smith, psychotherapist and counselor at Insight Coaching and Counseling in Reston, Virginia. Have a conversation with your last boss about your new needs and goals to see if you can reach a solution that works for you both. According to Smith, past employers are often happy to accommodate new mothers by arranging part-time schedules. And if you've build a strong reputation with that company, going back may also have a better financial payoff than a new job.

Ask the hiring manager about benefits before agreeing to take a job. Your baby has regular checkups, immunizations and a myriad of little concerns in his future. Part-time positions don't always offer work benefits; even some full-time positions don't. According to an ABC News in 2014, several companies did give their part-time employees with benefits. Among them were Trader Joe's, Starbucks, UPS, Whole Foods, Home Depot and Land's End. The hiring manager or human resources representative can tell you if the health coverage extends to your family members, and if it does, how much it costs for part-time employees.
Being licensed in any field of mental health opens a great many opportunities for part-time work, says Judith Gerberg, a career counselor in New York. You can find part-time openings in hospitals, private practices and social service agencies. Healthcare professionals like pediatricians and dentists can take on a partner so the hours are shared. Nurses can find more agreeable hours in doctor's offices, clinics and laboratories. Golf courses often hire part-time help to operate the beverage cart, run the bar and kitchen, start the players and maintain the grounds. Daycares hire part-time caregivers and may have the added benefit of letting you bring your baby with you. You can also find part-time openings in retail settings like grocery stores, clothing boutiques and bookstores.
There are plenty of opportunities outside of the box, especially in this digital age. You can pick up part-time work from home where you can be with your new baby. Freelance writing, editing and blogging positions are plentiful if you have strong writing skills and make connections with publishers, editors and website owners. You can become a dog walker, house sitter, personal assistant or general delivery person. Massage therapy, makeup artistry, cosmetology, website developing, house painting and home or office cleaning are all avenues where self-made work abounds. All of these come with the benefit of you setting your own hours.
