Ginger Tequila Hot Toddy

Photograph by Elba Valverde

Hot toddies save my life every time I get a cold, which happens almost always right when the leaves start to fall from the trees. What I love the most about this hot toddy recipe is the spicy ginger touch. And of course, the best twist to the traditional hot toddy is to replace the whisky with tequila. This version uses tequila reposado, which is aged in oak barrels from 2-12 months and has a slightly golden hue.

This recipe is quite tasty and will give you all the benefits, such as Vitamin C, the spicy, the sweetness and the warm and soothing feeling. Even if you're not sick, this is a great drink for a cold fall or winter night!

RECIPE: Ginger Tequila Hot Toddy
Yields 4 servings (about 1 cup each)

Prep time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of ginger cut into long, thin slices (choose a fresh ginger root about the size of your hand with your fingers slightly spread out)

  • 4 cups of water

  • 4 shots of tequila reposado (1 1/2 ounces each)

  • 4 tablespoons of agave nectar, divided (1 tablespoon per serving)

  • 6 key limes (1 1/2 key limes per serving)

Directions

  1. Cut the ginger in long thin slices.

  2. Add four cups of water in a teapot or just a regular pot and throw the ginger slices in.

  3. Bring the water to a boil. Lower the heat to a simmer for about 20 minutes.

  4. To make one mug, pour the ginger infusion into a mug and then add one shot of tequila, one tablespoon of agave nectar and squeeze the juice of 1 1/2 key limes.
