There is nothing cozier than embracing a chilly afternoon with a good book, a soft and warm throw, and a creamy mug of cocoa. Even better, if someone special is planted right next to you, doing the same. It is on one of those rare, quiet, completely fulfilling afternoons that I sat on my sofa surveying the scene in my living room, imagining the festive month to come. I wanted to translate this cozy feeling into decor to welcome in friends and family this holiday season — nothing too sparkly or grand — but subtle, inviting pieces to recognize the winter season and all that it brings. In colors and the creamiest white, an icy wash of the palest powder blue and an abundance of brass and candlelight, these select pieces are my December inspiration.

  • Displaying found, inexpensive paintings, photos, or statue chosen especially for the holidays across a mantle (11)
  • Fashion a garland out of something unexpected, like these beautiful tin flying horses. (3, 13)
  • Soften up chairs or hard wood floors with sheepskin and natural hides to create warmth. (6)
  • Arrange an abundance of candlesticks in the center of your dining table or mantle to create a magical candlelit ambiance. (1)
  • Beckon a reader with a soft throw blanket draped over the sofa. (5)
  • Increase seating in your living room with a cool chair or arrange some poufs around the coffee table to keep gatherings intimate. (4, 9)
  • Serve delicious, fine food and drinks using beautiful bowls, serve wear and an inviting bar cart. (7, 8, 10, 12)
  • Layer yourself in an understated, powder blue wool coat that will flatter all skin tones and keep you warm. (2)
