How Belly Bandit Co-Founder Lori Caden Changed Life After Pregnancy

Moms all over the world love Lori Caden. Like, really love her.

That's because the Los Angeles-based mom of two developed one of the most popular post-pregnancy products on the market—the Belly Bandit, a wrap-around band that helps bring postpartum tummies back to their pre-baby shape. Launched on Mother's Day 2008, Belly Bandit is now sold in more than 75 countries worldwide.

We got the chance to chat with Caden, who co-founded Belly Bandit with her two sisters. She offered up her advice for moms wanting to start a business, named two celeb moms who surprised her with serious Belly Bandit enthusiasm, and revealed how she teaches her kids about girl power.

What was your "ah-ha" moment when it came to creating the Belly Bandit?

It all started after my first pregnancy. My sisters were sick of hearing me complain about my post-baby belly. We knew there had to be a better way for women to get their body and confidence back after baby. The Belly Bandit was conceived after years of research, consultation with ob-gyns, and trial and error. By the time my second child was born, we had created our first band and knew we had a product that would revolutionize the industry.

You co-founded Belly Bandit with your sisters. What are the benefits and challenges of working with family?

My sisters are my best friends. Life doesn't get much better than working with them every day. This has been a dream of ours since we were little. We always wanted to live next door to each other and carpool to work! Now I live down the street from my little sister and my older sis is moving to the neighborhood next year! I am not going to lie, we all have strong personalities and differences of opinion definitely happen, but we have a common goal and somehow we always seem to make it work!

Your business is powered by women. What are some ways you're teaching your kids about "girl power"?

The idea of "girl power" resonated with me from a very young age, in a large part due to my dad's advice and encouragement. He taught my sisters and me that nothing was out of reach, and you can do anything you set your mind to. He would tell us that we all start with a clean, fresh palette to which we can choose our colors! I share that same message with my daughter all the time. She has always been a confident young girl, and my hope is that she is always empowered to follow her dreams! #GirlPower

Describe the moment when you first felt successful.

When I delivered my first child I definitely felt successful, and with the birth of my second I was officially over the moon! But in terms of my business, that's a tougher question! I'm never completely satisfied, always trying to achieve more, create better products and please our customers. I have incredibly high standards, so, as far as success in business, I'll have to let you know when I get there!

The truth is every day brings different challenges, and I don't think I'm ever completely in balance.

What's your advice for moms who are looking to start their own business?

My advice to women looking to start their own business is a very simple recipe of passion and a perseverance. (And yes, working capital is always a plus!) But, if you believe in what you are doing and continue to stay focused, success will find you.

Your products are used and endorsed by so many celebrity moms. Which celeb mom did you get most excited about when you heard that she was using your product?

It's a tie between Christina Applegate (yes, I loved the "Bundy" days!) and Christina Aguilera. I am a big fan of both of these women, and it's an honor and thrill to know that they our fans of our products!

What sacrifices have you made as both a mom and an entrepreneur to keep everything in balance?

I hate this question because the truth is every day brings different challenges, and I don't think I'm ever completely in balance. Will I leave the office in the middle of the day to take my kids to the doctor? Of course! Will I take a business call while out with my family? Yes, I'll do that too. I try to make it all work—but I can't say that my life is always in balance; I can say that it's never dull!

Do you have any new products that you're working on?

Yes, we are very excited to be launching six new products in the first two quarters of 2016. Stay tuned!
