February is my favorite time to be quiet and listen to what's ruminating inside. After much holiday socializing and consumption of food, gifts and spirits, my entire being needs a rest. It begins shortly after my birthday, and this year, I am contemplating living more simply: going gray, garage sales, a family road trip, editing down to the essentials in life and home. In my search for this balance, introspection and renewal, a few fundamentals to inspire.

  • What do you see when you look in the mirrors? (1, 7, 8, 12, 13)
  • A perfect velvet cushion to make a meditation space. New to the practice? Try Headspace to begin. (2)
  • The act of coloring is quiet, calming and contemplative. (3, 4)
  • Journal writing is a great, cleansing exercise. It's even more interesting to return to it a few hours or days later to review. (5)
  • Art is an inspiring way to filter thoughts and ideas. (6, 11)
  • Get away for a few minutes for a hot soak and scrub at home. (9)
  • Wrap yourself and the ones you love in soft blankets. (10)
  • Keep cozy and collected in a wool cape. (14)
  • Read an introspective novel. (15)
