Hot Apple Cider Margarita

When the weather gets cold, spice things up with this Mexican-inspired toddy. While silver tequila is at home in a cold margarita, we prefer a smoother gold or reposado tequila that's been aged a bit in oak for this hot version.

Ingredients

For drink

  • 5 cups unfiltered apple cider
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3/4 cup gold tequila
  • 1/3 cup triple sec, such as Grand Marnier or Cointreau
  • 8 cinnamon sticks (optional)

For cinnamon sugar rim

  • 1 orange wedge
  • 1/4 cup sugar (a mixture of cane sugar and coarse sugar works nicely)
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon

Directions

1. To make cocktail, in a large saucepan, combine apple cider, lemon juice and salt over low heat until it begins to simmer. Add tequila and triple sec and stir until mixture is hot.

2. If serving in glasses, put a spoon into each glass to prevent cracking when pouring in hot mixture. Divide mixture among eight sugar-rimmed glasses and garnish with cinnamon stick.

3. To make sugar rim, mix sugar and cinnamon on a flat plate. Run orange slice around rim of glass. Roll rim of glass in cinnamon sugar mixture.
