This hilarious device from 1931 might not have caught on nationwide, but it’s so hilarious we had to include it in our rundown of fads. As written up in an issue of Popular Mechanics, this was a contraption that linked a set of pedals to a saddle-like seat that moved in unison with them, kind of like riding a horse. You could sit or lie on it in different positions to work out different sets of muscles. Obviously, this is just a variant of the stationary bicycle, which is still used in modern fitness programs.
