We all know working out does a body good. But did you know that exercising could reduce your risk of womb cancer? By working out for around 30 minutes a day, five days a week, you could cut your risk significantly, according to a new study.
In the UK, only 56 percent of women exercise the recommended amount, and a surprisingly low 39 percent are a healthy weight. The study shows that if women were to maintain a healthy weight and exercise schedule, "that could help prevent 44 percent of new cases in Britain."
Endometrial cancer, or womb cancer, affects women over 60 and is one of the most common cancers. But how are cancer and exercise connected? According to the Daily Mail: "Scientists believe there are several reasons for the link between body fat and cancer, such as fat cells releasing hormones that can increase the risk of some cancers. Regular physical activity can help to keep these hormone levels healthy as well as strengthening the immune system and maintaining a healthy digestive system."
And while lack of exercise has been significantly linked to endometrial cancer, the executive director of the World Cancer Research Fund says, "To reduce the risk of womb and other cancers, [we] recommend being as lean as possible without becoming underweight and being active for at least 30 minutes every day." Other factors like drinking coffee may also cut your risk, but no concrete evidence has been found, at least not enough to recommend it like exercise.
