WATCH: 5-Year-Old Cancer Survivor Gets Superhero Surprise
byKaitlin StanfordNov 27, 2013
For most kids, a trip to the movie theater is pretty awesome in and of itself. But seeing your own story being told in the opening trailer? Mind. Blown.
And that's exactly what happened to 5-year-old Antonio of Ontario, Canada, who thought he was there to catch a new kids' flick. Instead, the lights went out, the trailers started, and he watched in stunned silence—along with a theater full of people—as the story of a caped crusader was interrupted. "Isn't it time we celebrated real heroes?" the narrator can be heard saying, right before Antonio's face flashes across the screen.
You see, Antonio isn't just your typical 5-year-old. Last year, he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and endured agonizing rounds of chemo at a treatment center called SickKids. Now a year older, he's been through way more than anyone should have to deal with at his age, and he's done it all (according to friends and family) with a smile on his face and a sense of humor.
"His smile can light up a room," his mother Nova told the SickKids Foundation. "Even when he's feeling sick from chemo, he still cracks jokes. It's amazing."
And that's exactly why his good friends at SickKids wanted to surprise him with a little something special—and remind him of the superhero he is. The results are pretty powerful.
