The power of the Internet has struck yet again. The 27-year-old "Burger King Baby" who was abandoned as a newborn in a bathroom of the fast-food chain has finally found her birth mom, thanks in part to Facebook. In case you missed it, Katherine Depril launched her search on March 2 with a photo post on the social media site where she is seen holding a sign reading, "Looking for my birth mother. ... She abandoned me in the Burger King bathroom only hours old, Allentown PA. Please help me find her by sharing my post." Soon, the photo was shared by over 30,000 Facebook users.
And as fate would have it, Depril's birth mother had also recently started a quest of her own to find the baby she had left behind, so when word reached her about Depril's search, she came forward to attorney John Waldren to arrange a meeting.
Depril, now an EMT and married mother of three, tells NBC Chicago, "She is better than anything I could've ever imagined. She is so sweet and amazing. I'm so happy." The pair met for four hours and exchanged contact information.
While Depril has not responded to questions as to why her mother abandoned her, Waldren told The Morning Call that she was raped as a teenager during a trip to Europe and hid the pregnancy from her parents. But all that is in the past now. Depril said she "110 percent, absolutely" forgives her mother and that they are planning on having a relationship.
