McDonald's Unveils a New Mascot, Weirds-Out Kids Everywhere

Last week, McDonald's introduced its all-new mascot "Happy" to less-than-rave reviews. That is, according to the kids interviewed by New York Mag's Grub Street. (But we're willing to bet their reactions are pretty universal.) In a video clip of the interviews, child after child is seen being creeped out, confused and generally unsure of what to make of Happy — who is essentially a Happy Meal box with "a real person's mouth" on the front of the package.
As one girl hilariously notes, "For a second, it kind of makes me happy, and for like the other second it kind of creeps me out."
Unsurprisingly, that's not the reaction McDonald's marketing team was going for when they introduced "Happy." In fact, in a recent press release, they describe him as "a new animated Happy Meal character that brings fun and excitement to kids’ meals while also serving as an ambassador for balanced and wholesome eating."
Hmm, we're not sure that's going to happen, but we do like the fact that they're looking to promote healthy eating.
