12-Year-Old Makes Grisly Discovery in Abandoned House

Is it just us, or does every neighborhood have that one super creepy house at the end of the block? The one that all the kids make up stories about and dare each other to go into over the summer? When we were kids, we'd definitely be the ones chickening out as soon as we made it to the mailbox. But a kid from Dayton, Ohio, who bravely (and illegally) trespassed onto an abandoned property, went a few steps further — and his discovery inside the house was quite simply the stuff of nightmares.
We'll just cut to the chase here: It was a mummified body. Hanging in a closet. For five years.
Yep! That's enough to scar you for life.
Though the door to the house was covered with citations, the yard was overgrown and no one had seen the owner for years, neighbors just assumed its owner Edward Brunton had moved away. After all, the inside of the house was completely unfurnished and they had never even met him.
But in reality, authorities now say Brunton hanged himself with a belt in his closet back in 2009 — a move that had actually led to his body's preservation, since the confines of the closet kept him from decomposing and prevented animals or insects from getting inside.
"Because of the location where he was found, it was relatively protected, sunlight-protected, temperature-protected and low humidity," local coroner Kent Harshbarger told WDTN.
Adding even more weirdness to the story (but perhaps explaining why none of the neighbors grew concerned for Brunton) was the fact that he had purchased the home just months before his death. According to CNN, he was estranged from all family and friends, which was also why no one close to him reported him missing.
The body may have continued hanging there for longer, had it not been for the curious sixth-grader, who discovered it after exploring the house and peeking into the closet.
Now, what do you do when you're 12 and just found a dead body? You run home to Mom, immediately.
“My son came home and he said to me that he had gone into an abandoned house and he found a body,” Michelle McGrath told WHIO-TV. “When he first came across it, he thought it was a dummy, or a mannequin or something.”
But oh, was it not.
After the boy took his mom back to see the remains, McGrath called the police, who are now still investigating.
Yikes! Looks like it will be a while before that kid goes exploring again.
