Running contests and giveaways on mom.me is always fun. We love to read the submissions, and getting photos of adorable kids is an added bonus.
When we found out that the winner of our LEGO grand prize, 15-month-old Kamden Howell of Ohio, was battling cancer, we wanted to share his story and the Facebook page that his parents have created, "Community for the Care of Kamden."
It's especially fitting because September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
When he was 9 months old, Kamden was diagnosed with S4 intermediate neuroblastoma, a cancer that affects the nerve cells and tissues. He's gone through several rounds of chemotherapy as well as surgery to remove a tumor around his adrenal gland and kidney.
As of August 27, Kamden's medical scans were looking up, the Facebook page reports. The tumors on his skull and other places have disappeared, while the ones in his abdomen and legs are stable.
He was even allowed to go out in public — which before could have compromised his immune system — and he ate dinner with his family at a local Steak 'n Shake. His smile was as big and bright as ever.
After she found out that he had won the LEGO prize, Kamden's mother, Brandi Richardson, emailed us and wrote:
"I wanted to let you know that we received our prize and my son LOVES it!!! I wanted to write you and thank you! As you might remember, Kamden has cancer, and the prizes he's won will definitely help in his recovery! The iPad Air will help his developmental delays with games and apps he can interact with!!"
The best news of all?
"His prognosis is looking good," his mother wrote.
Congratulations, Kamden, and we wish you nothing but the best!
