Sad news this week for Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak and his family. His beloved daughter Alina Claire Kupchak, who had been battling a difficult but unspecified illness for some time, passed away Monday afternoon. She was just 15 years old.

In a press release issued on behalf of Mitch and his wife, Claire, the Lakers announced Alina's passing on the team's official Website and asked the public for some time to grieve.

"The family asks for and appreciates their privacy at this difficult time, and would like to express their gratitude for everyone's love, support, thoughts and prayers," the statement read.

It wasn't long before the public started reacting to the sad news. Among them were some words from former basketball star Magic Johnson, who tweeted, “My condolences go out to a super friend and teammate, Mitch Kupchak and his wife Claire, on the passing of their 15-year-old daughter Alina."

Despite being with the Lakers for 28 seasons now, Mitch Kupchak moved more into the spotlight in 2000, when he succeeded former general manager Jerry West. In addition to Alina, Mitch and and his wife Claire also have a son, 18-year-old Maxwell, who is said to be graduating from Brentwood School later this year.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the entire Kupchak family at this sad time.
