Jolene Carter has invented a machine she calls "Popcorn Monsoon," a bright yellow contraption that is the most exciting and fun way to pop popcorn we've ever seen.
The description of her machine begins with a Willy Wonka quote—“Come with me, and you’ll be in a world of pure imagination"—and we wouldn't be surprised if we saw something like this in his famous chocolate factory. It's whimsical, bright, interactive and seems almost impossible, which makes it all the more fun!
"Most popcorn machines are very dull, though the simple process of making popcorn is exciting. That's what this machine enlarges. It's an experience for both children and adults," said Carter.
Her process for designing the machine was totally creative. She started with pure imagination and a lot of drawings of shapes of different colors. She viewed the process as more of a playful exercise first. The function of the shape came later. Her "Popcorn Monsoon" was just one example of how a drawing became a functional popcorn machine.
Using the machine is simple: Fill one side with popcorn kernels and cap it with a cork. Flip the switch on the body of the machine and wait. As the kernels heat up and start to pop, they fly and dance around. Eventually, the fully popped kernels fly through a U-shaped tube and into an empty and waiting bowl on the other side. It's amazing (and surprisingly addictive) to watch.
After seeing what Carter has done to a traditional popcorn machine, we're thinking we need an entire kitchen appliance makeover.
