As more and more parents try to get their girls over the toy marketing hump in the hopes they'll take a greater interest in tech, families would also like to know just what kind of a boy's club they're sending their future engineers and MBAs into. It's a big boys club, where investment in companies run by men far outpaces the amount of money put into women-owned companies.
The problem of so few women in tech — and the "bro culture" women face when they do step into that world — is what makes the cover art accompanying the piece so awful. Social media pushed back, as it does, calling the cover "insulting," "tone deaf" "objectification of women."
One wonders why it's always women that have to be humiliated — both in Silicon Valley and in art depicting Silicon Valley. Why not a knuckle-dragging ape in a hoody? Or a scruffy guy with money coming out his pockets calling a female coding genius "bossy"?
Instead, the magazine went for a '40s pinup reference, with a cursor lifting up the back of her skirt.
