New Mexico Toddler Shoots Both Parents With One Bullet

No injuries were fatal

Kids and unsecured guns don't mix. Need proof? How about the 3-year-old boy in Albuquerque who managed to take down both of his parents—including his 8-months-pregnant mother—with one shot. Is he a baby gunslinger? Heck no. Were his parents irresponsible enough to leave an unattended, loaded, unlocked handgun in bag? You betcha.

Investigators said the little boy was reaching into his mother's purse for an iPad, but found the loaded gun and fired a single shot, according to New York Daily News. The bullet first struck the father in his buttock and then hit the mother in the right shoulder. The injuries are reportedly non-life-threatening. The toddler's 2-year-old sister was also in the room but unharmed.

"It was like if I was to get up, shake your hand and sit back down. That's how fast it happened," the boy's father said. "All of a sudden we heard a gun go off and the next minute I realized my girlfriend was bleeding. Then, I sat down and realized I was shot, too."

The blink of an eye. That's how quickly it took for the lives of an entire family to be at risk because a gun was not properly stored. The family was reportedly living in the motel room where the shooting happened, and the children are now under the care of child services. Both parents are facing charges of felony criminal negligence.
