9-Year-Old Couture Model Creates Controversy and Conversation

A 9-year-old in China named Xiu Qiu recently walked in Chinese designer Laurence Xu's haute couture fashion runway show in Paris. The pint-sized fashion powerhouse is now appearing all over Chinese media channels. Naturally, having such a young model in a haute couture show is stirring up quite the discussion, and the comments definitely vary—everything from grandparents thinking their own granddaughter is cuter (typical) to how inappropriate it is to have someone that young modeling.

Xu was the only Chinese designer invited by the Chambre Syndicale to participate in the Paris Haute Couture shows, which makes Xiu Qiu even more special. Xu is a rising fashion star in China, dressing some of the biggest Chinese stars in his unique couture creations.

Xu is known to honor Chinese traditions in his collections, featuring extremely intricate, complicated processes for silk weaving using a process that's thousands of years old. Any relation between Xu and Qiu is unknown, although he walked the runway after the show holding her hand.

Qiu looked impressively calm and collected as she walked the runway in front of hundreds of people and pops from the flashbulbs. This is her second time appearing at Paris Fashion Week, which is held bi-annually for fall/winter and spring/summer collections. Her name means "hydrangea" in Chinese, and her gorgeous gown was also fittingly floral. The cream-colored dress was covered in brocade flowers, as well as her floral headband.
