Mom's Etsy Business Makes Bank

What started out as a hobby is turning one San Francisco-area mother into a self-made millionaire.

About four years ago Alicia Shaffer started crafting women's handmade headbands for her clothing boutique and also began selling them on Etsy under the username Three Bird Nest (the name is a nod to her children). After a slow first few weeks, business started to boom, and eventually Shaffer sold the boutique to focus on her Etsy business full-time.

Now, with the help of other Bay Area moms, Shaffer is creating more headband designs to keep up with demand for her product, KPIX 5 reports.

“I really wanted to be able to sell the products and make a few extra dollars for dance lessons or soccer or whatnot for my children,” Shaffer told KPIX 5.

Turns out, she was able to earn much more than that.

These days Three Bird Nest averages 150 orders a day, and three times that during the holidays. Shaffer does about $75,000 in sales a month, according to KPIX 5.

While her hottest item are the headbands, Shaffer also sells scarves, leg warmers, jewelry and more.

“Our goal is to provide something to our customer that is going to complement her style,” she said. "I want to continue to see Three Bird Nest grow. I want it to be a household name."
