New York mom blogger Lacey Spears faces 25 years in prison after a jury found her guilty of intentionally poisoning to death her 5-year-old son.
Spears was arrested last summer after an investigation concluded that she had put salt into Garnett Paul Spears' feeding tube. The boy died in January last year after a life of being hospitalized for ailments investigators say were largely made up by Spears.
The 27-year-old mother chronicled her son's frequent ailments and illnesses—including ear infections, unexplained fevers, seizures and digestive issues—on Facebook and in a personal blog. Prosecutors believed the mom had a rare psychological disorder, Münchausen syndrome by proxy, in which parents injure a child in order to get attention, but the illness was not introduced at the trial.
Spears started taking Garnett to the hospital when he was 5 days old. At 10 weeks old, he had his first bout with sudden and inexplicable high levels of sodium.
A neighbor told prosecutors that on the night of the boy's death, Spears had asked for help in disposing of an IV bag for fluids. The bag was recovered and tested for high levels of sodium. Spears says she had salt on hand for seasoning his food and that he may have accidentally plunged a syringe full of salt into the bag.
Spears' defense attorneys say she was convicted on sketchy evidence and that the boy's treatments at the hospital are to blame for his death.
