7 Children Die in Brooklyn House Fire

"We heard the screaming ... We heard screaming. "

Those were the tragic words spoken by an elderly resident when asked what woke her when a Brooklyn house fire killed seven children this week.

The incident started when a hot plate caught fire. The mother and one daughter survived by jumping out of a second-story window.

"We have not been able to find working smoke detectors on either the first or second floor," said a firefighter on the scene.

One onlooker at the scene described the family was described as devout Orthodox Jews who had grown up in the neighborhood.

How many smoke detectors are in your home? Do you always make sure they're working?
