In-Utero Baby Hates Mom's Cigarette Smoke

Do you hate secondhand smoke? Well, if you're smoking while pregnant, that's exactly what you're subjecting your unborn child to.

So how does a baby in the womb react when his or her mother lights up? According to The Telegraph, the baby actually appears to grimace.

Dangers of smoking while pregnant have already been documented, with issues like a higher risk of premature birth, as well as respiratory problems in newborns.

But now scientists have a glimpse inside the womb to see how a fetus actually reacts to cigarette smoke, and they're hoping to use the images to encourage women to break the habit of smoking while pregnant.

The research, conducted by Durham and Lancaster universities, is published in the journal Acta Paediatrica.
