There's is no place on the Uber app to note that you're going into labor, or that the driver is going to be making a mad dash from Brooklyn to a Manhattan hospital. But that's what happened in NYC this week.
Better hope the car that picks you up has leather seats for easy cleanup!
The New York Post (who else?!?) reports that a pregnant Brooklyn woman woke up Monday morning with contractions and hopped into an Uber car to head to the hospital—much cheaper than an ambulance!—but ended up giving birth in the back seat.
"We heard crying. The next thing I know, I had a baby in my hand," new dad David Horvitz told The Post. We were all in shock."
Horvitz hailed a Nissan Altima with Uber for his wife, Zanna Gilbert, and saw that an Uber car was a mere five minutes away from their Crown Heights apartment. They wanted to go to Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, about 12 driving miles away, a possible eternity in New York City traffic. The car got as far as 57th Street and Park Avenue, a couple blocks from Mt. Sinai, when their 7-pound daughter was born.
"I just kept telling the driver I was sorry," Horvitz said of their Uber savior, Germaine Allen. "But he said, 'Don't worry, that was amazing!'" As luck would have it, Allen is expecting his own baby girl in two months.
Uber gave Allen a pair of Knicks tickets for his kind actions, and the company got his car cleaned.
