When lesbian couple Melanie and Vanessa Iris Roy of Charlotte, North Carolina, decided to post their side-by-side pregnancy photo on Instagram, they had no idea how crazy their life was about to become. The now uber-popular shot shows Vanessa in the first photo—taken in January 2014—clearly pregnant and Melanie holding a bouquet of blue hydrangeas behind her back, while the next image—taken in January 2015—is of Melanie pregnant while Vanessa holds pink flowers behind her back while their son Jax plays in the sand beneath, with the caption "Trading places."
Various LGBT sites quickly began to pick up on the sweet image including a Brazilian organization called The Rainbow Group who shared it to their Facebook wall. The pic has garnered over 20,000 shares and over 160,000 likes from just that post alone!
Melanie tells the Huffington Post, "It's crazy to see that people were referring to my family as an inspiration. We are still in complete shock." She goes on to say that "... [W]oman's body is incredible. The way it creates and grows another human being is amazing. We hope that our picture is that sign that some women may need to encourage them to carry a child."
