So much for bottled water as a safer alternative to the tap. Niagara Bottling, a national, private-label water company with 14 brands in Wegmans, Giant Food Stores, 7-Eleven, Shoprite and many other grocery stores, has issued a large-scale recall.
All water bottled between 3 a.m. on June 10 and 8 p.m. on June 15 at two different Pennsylvania facilities is being voluntarily recalled due to E. coli found in a spring water source. Though no reports of illness have been filed, Niagara explained in a statement that "out of an abundance of caution and in the strict interested of public safety" they would still move forward with the recall. A consumer notice on the company's website explains how to figure out if your water is impacted.
Niagara Bottling's situation is the most recent in a rash of recalls over the last few months.
Earlier this year, Blue Bell Creameries, Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream and Sabra Hummus were also recalled. More stringent precautions from the FDA as well as the quick spread of news via social media have both contributed to the increasing visibility of such situations.
