Univision Dumps Trump and Miss USA Over Anti-Immigrant Speech

Photograph by Getty Images

Donald Trump launched his presidential bid recently and had the misfortune of talking out loud. The Latino celebrity community has hit him back hard — where it counts — in his bank account. Puerto Rican actress Roselyn Sanchez has bowed out of co-hosting the Miss USA pageant. She was scheduled to co-host with Chilean actor Cristian De La Fuente who also bowed out, as did Colombian musician J Balvin, who was slated to perform. Univision has said it will not only cease broadcasting and co-producing the pageant, but is also severing all business ties with the Miss Universe Organization and Trump going forward. About 80 percent of the company's employees are Latinos.

Trump assured the American people during his presidential bid speech that if he becomes leader of the free world, he'll build a "Great wall" on the Mexican-American border to keep the criminals out, and will also be forcing Mexicans to pay for it. Because apparently, Donald Trump thinks being president of the United States makes you king of the world, too.

He also said, and I quote, "the U.S. has become a dumping ground for everybody else's problems. When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're not sending you. They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people […] It's coming from more than Mexico. It's coming from all over South and Latin America, and it's coming probably — probably — from the Middle East." Yep, he said it!

The man's a racist and I don't care how much money he has, he can't undo the damage he has done with that speech. The Latino community may not be the majority in the United States but we are mighty and when you insult one of us, you insult us all. What Trump calls a band of criminals, we call family. I shudder to think about how to explain this kind of racist, classist, vile speech to my children.

Apparently, Donald Trump thinks most Mexican and Latin American immigrants are nothing more than a scourge on society being that he believes we are all rapists, drug lords, and criminal sorts. Not a smart move for a person wanting to win a presidential race to call the fastest-growing population in the United States garbage. Frankly, I'm surprised he didn't call out the African-Americans and Jews, too. He's probably saving that for a speech a little further down the line.

Donald Trump has always been a joke to me, a one-percenter out of touch with reality. I just assumed he was just an eccentric guy, due to everyone letting him say and do what he wants because of his deep pockets.

Now, in a race to the bottom, Trump has banned Univision execs and staff from his Miami golf resort and vowed to sue Univision for breach of contract. Is this kindergarten? Univision subsequently told its employees they should "not stay at Trump properties while on company business or hold events/activities there."

I applaud Univision for pulling out of Miss USA and severing ties with Trump and his organizations. This time, he has gone too far and Latinos are calling him on his bullshit. Money can't buy respect, and if you ask me, Trump is the real criminal because he's a bigot and a promoter of racism.
