When students arrived to begin their fall semester at the Norfolk campus of Old Dominion
University, they were greeted by three gigantic welcome banners
hanging from a nearby house. The first banner read: "ROWDY AND FUN / HOPE YOUR BABY GIRL IS READY FOR A GOOD TIME." The
middle banner had an arrow pointing to the front door, alongside the words: "FRESHMAN DAUGHTER DROP-OFF." Right next to it, a banner read: "GO AHEAD AND DROP OFF MOM TOO."
John Broderick, the president of ODU, released a public
statement saying he was "outraged about the offensive message directed toward
"While we constantly educate students, faculty and staff about sexual assault
and sexual harassment, this incident confirms our collective efforts are still
failing to register with some."
students thought the prank was funny, national leaders of the Sigma Nu fraternity
suspended the chapter at ODU after the banners were discovered to have been
creations of fraternity members.
"The Fraternity condemns
the derogatory and demeaning language used on the banners," president Brad
Beacham announced Monday. "Such language has no place in our Fraternity or
within any caring community, such as that of ODU."
