Mom Woken From Coma By Newborn's Cries

Shelly Cawley and her husband, Jeremy are celebrating their daughter Rylan's first birthday this month (pictured above). Aside from reaching this milestone, the Cawley's will also celebrate the anniversary of a life that many believe began with a miracle.

The couple from Concord, North Carolina faced a traumatic situation last September when Shelly went into labor and had to have an emergency C-section.

During the surgery, a blood clot broke causing Shelly to go into a coma. Her daughter Rylan was delivered safely but Shelley never woke up.

Jeremy told Fox 46 that he was in shock. "The idea of going from the highest of emotions of having a child born…to the next moments where you think you're going to be saying goodbye to your wife within four or five hours. I was numb."

Shelly was then attached to a last chance ventilator, hoping to stir her from the coma, but it did not work. Not knowing what else to do, her healthy daughter Rylan was placed on her chest in hopes that the skin to skin contact would help.

Rylan's cries as she nestled against her mother's chest, caused a spike in Shelly's vitals.

"They think that me hearing her subconsciously gave my body and my subconscious a reason to fight. That I still needed to be there for my baby," Shelley told Fox46.

A week later, Shelley completely woke up from her coma and was officially introduced to newborn Rylan, the tiny miracle that saved her life.
