Why Are Moms Tweeting About Their Abortions?

Pushing back against recent efforts to defund Planned Parenthood, Lindy West and Amelia Bonow launched the hashtag #ShoutYourAbortion on Twitter and Facebook. The social media campaign is an effort to end the stigma of abortion. In the last four days, thousands of women have shared their feelings about (and reasons for) terminating their pregnancies.

The hashtag highlighting abortion stories is taking off on Twitter and Facebook as women speak publicly about knowing what it's like to be pregnant and need options.

Lindy West, the mother who is credited with starting the hashtag along with Amelia Bonow, told a reporter, "In our culture, abortion is something we talk about in whispers, in corners, in private with other women, or not at all. Without any open public discourse about the reality of abortion—the reality being that it is a basic medical procedure and a third of people with uteruses will have one—opponents are able to spin it as anything they want."

Bonow, 30, wrote a widely shared Facebook post four days ago about her abortion. In it, she expressed her outrage at the House's vote to defund Planned Parenthood. She said she has no regrets.

Other women tweeted that they, too, know the real aftermath of terminating a pregnancy. They made decisions for their bodies, live with the consequences and go on to have happy, productive (and reproductive!) lives.

Women who haven't undergone an abortion procedure are also tweeting their support.
