Who doesn't love Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah"? Now Utah mom Shannon Abbot has taken this modern classic and turned it into a soulful ode to motherhood—dirty diapers and all.
Abbot sits next to her adorable 5-month-old son Adam while belting out lyrical gems touching on all the major hallmarks of parenting such as, "Then there is my threenager / It's like she's 3 plus a teenager! / She thinks she knows it all and I know nothing / With backwards shoes and princess dresses / 'I'll do it myself!' and lots of messes / when bedtime comes, I'll sing, 'Oh, hallelujah!'" It's no wonder this YouTube video has quickly gone viral.
It doesn't hurt that Abbot has an incredible voice to convey all the emotion of the original rendition. Just like motherhood, this version of the song is bound to make you laugh and cry—sometimes at the same time.
Abbot originally performed this at a local talent show and tells KSL, "It's a beautiful song, but the original lyrics are kind of weird, so I thought, 'Maybe I'll just change it.' It just kind of came to fit my own life about being a mommy and all the crazy, awesome, hard things that happen when you're at home with your 'crazies.'"
Our personal favorite line? "It's 3 a.m. and you're wide awake / Baby, go to sleep for heaven's sake / Mama's gonna be a zombie in the morning." And when that baby finally does go to sleep, you can bet mamas everywhere are singing "Hallelujah!"
