5-Year-Old Kicked Out of School for Having Two Moms

A lesbian couple enrolled their 5-year-old daughter in a private school in California only to be called into the principal's office and told that their daughter's application had been reviewed and she would be dismissed, according to the New York Daily News.

Sheena and Lashaune (no last name given) enrolled their daughter in Mt. Erie Christian Academy in San Diego. Their daughter was dismissed shortly before the Labor Day holiday, much to their dismay.

After examining Mt. Erie Christian Academy's official parent and student handbook, there is a written policy that the school has the right to refuse admission of applicants or discontinue the enrollment of students.

According to a report by KGTV the handbook states: "This includes, but is not necessarily limited to, living in, condoning or supporting sexual immorality; practicing homosexual lifestyle or alternative gender identity; promoting such practices; or otherwise having the inability to support the moral principles of the school."

Since it is a private institution, the First Amendment affords the academy a right to exclude membership based on religious beliefs but the parents of the 5-year-old aren't taking this lightly and plan to file a civil rights lawsuit against the school.

"I want my baby to be safe when she grows up," Sheena told KGTV. "I don't want her to ever have to be discriminated against because of her lifestyle."
