Actor/rapper/producer/everything awesome dad Will Smith and his wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith, are known for their hands-off parenting style. They don't dole out many punishments or rules to son Jaden, 14 and daughter Willow, 12: "The rule in our house is you can do anything that you want and we don’t pull the parent card until danger is involved," Will told the The Sun. This tactic has led to some unexpected results, like a self-shaved head for Willow, but on the whole, the kids—both with their own blossoming show-biz careers—seem to be doing just fine.

The next twist in the family saga: When Jaden turns 15 in July, he would like a unique present: emancipation. “He says, ‘Dad, I want to be emancipated.’ I know if we do this, he can be an emancipated minor, because he really wants to have his own place, like ooh," says Will. “That’s the backlash. On the other side, if kids just want to have command of their lives, I understand.” Will doesn't speak of any rift in the family—he and Jaden are actually promoting their latest tandem film, After Earth, together right now. Rather, Jaden just seems to want a little freedom and a little space.

Stay tuned to see what sort of present Jaden unwraps this summer!
