Mother of Sewer Baby Present for Rescue

In a situation that has many questions and very few answers, the story of the baby rescued from a Chinese sewer keeps getting more and more complicated. It turns out that the mother, a 22-year-old, gave birth over a toilet (which is big enough for a baby to slip through into the sewer system). But she was actually the person who called for help and was with police during the two-hour rescue.

The mother had not admitted to the police that it was her child until they searched her room, which was littered with baby toys and objects as well as bloody toilet paper. The police questioned her, at which point she confessed her motherhood. Reports show that everyone is still unclear whether the mother intended to abandon the child or not, though she claims that she was simply unable to pull up the baby herself—and at that point had sent for help. According to the story from the Huffington Post, the mom had not revealed that she was pregnant to anyone, including her family. The baby is now recovering with minimal injuries.
