Our Beauty Coach? Mom

“Sit up straight!” “Brush your bangs aside so we can see your beautiful eyes!”

Remember all that great beauty advice your mom used to give you (you know, in between wondering aloud why you don't call her more often)? It turns out that our mothers are our major style influence, according to a poll of 2,000 women conducted by cosmetic brand Lancôme.

The results show we trust good old mom more than any celeb styling expert—in fact, a third of the women who participated in the poll said they rely on mom alone for good-grooming tips, reports Business Standard.

Among the top tips our moms pass along:

  • Always remove your makeup before going to bed
  • Moisturize all the way down to the base of your neck
  • Wear bras that fit well
  • Don’t pluck the area above your eyebrows
  • When it comes to beauty, less is more
  • Make sure you always use sunscreen
  • Don’t shave your legs above your knees
  • Sit up straight so you don’t get hunchbacked (told ya!)
  • Black bras under white tops are a no-no

Lancôme thinks this is all good news: “It’s heartening mothers and daughters share a similar style. Most women have a genuine interest in fashion and beauty, and it’s nice grown women are still chatting to their mom about what products they’re using and what suits them,” a company spokesperson said. “We inherit so much from our mothers they are always going to be the most trustworthy person to turn to.”
