On April 15, the Richard family lost 8-year-old son Martin in the Boston Marathon bombing—but that wasn't all.
Their 7-year-old daughter, Jane, lost a leg in the explosions, while mom Denise suffered a serious eye injury, and dad Bill was injured with shrapnel wounds. Son Henry, 11, was the only one to escape unharmed.
But on Aug. 15, the family released an image of their smiling daughter on their Tumblr page, showing just how far the little girl had come since the tragedy and how well she was adjusting to life after surgery. After about three months in the hospital, she was released a few weeks ago, they say.
The family went on to write:
"Jane continues to be an incredible source of inspiration—and exhaustion. The loss of her leg has not slowed her one bit, or deterred her in any way. As we knew she would, when we finally returned home, Jane walked into the house with the aid of her crutches, but under her own power."
The family acknowledges, however, that the "pain is constant and even the sweetest moments can become heartbreaking when we are struck by the realization that 'Martin would have loved this…'
The Richard family does say that kids Jane and Henry are eager to get back to school and that Henry has been "strong, attentive and protective of all of us."
