LinkedIn Sets Sights on High Schoolers Heading to College

Remember the days of thumbing through those giant "Best Colleges in America" books or sending away for brochure to hear about a university's perks? Things have obviously come a long way since those days; and, luckily for your kid, the college shopping process sounds like it's about to get a whole lot easier. LinkedIn has announced its lowered the age bar to 14, all in an effort to connect would-be college students with schools—before they've even started browsing.
"University Pages," as they're being called, will create a new forum on LinkedIn for students to peruse potential schools, build a network of their favorites, and essentially "shop" and connect with a university before they've even set foot in it. All in all, LinkedIn is trying to make the whole process a little less overwhelming. And it all sounds pretty promising.
"If you think about the resources that are available to teenagers at this time, you don't really have this ability," Altimeter Group analyst Susan Etlinger told USA Today. Yet, ironically, high schoolers are starting to think about their college destinations at a younger and younger age—meaning LinkedIn is stepping in at just the right time.
Long thought of as the post-college social networking destination for adult professionals, LinkedIn already boasts 240 million members. But with the launch of University Pages (which LinkedIn says will start with 200 colleges and promises thousands more to come), that number is sure to skyrocket. Another big perk of the newly added feature? Potential students can check out the alumni who have graduated from each school along with the companies they now work at, and connect with them for advice.
