If you're anything like us, you were probably rocking out in a major way to Katy Perry's "Roar" last night on the VMAs. (OK, make that the last few weeks straight. And in your shower this morning. And on the ride to work.) The singer's latest single has basically been everywhere lately, thanks to its insanely catchy beat and girl power message. But it's also got some uncanny similarities to another pretty popular hit of-late: Sara Bareilles' "Brave."
The Internet has not let that fact go unsung. In the weeks since its (probably staged) "leak," "Roar" has been covered and mashed up with "Brave" by basically everyone with a webcam and a YouTube account.
None, however, has been quite so impressive and lovably endearing as that of 9-year-old JDViolinBoy, a YouTuber whose performance first caught our attention when we saw it featured on Jezebel. But it must be noted that this kid didn't just create a mash-up of "Roar" and "Brave"—he also managed to sneak in bits of Jason Derulo's "The Other Side" and The Lumineers' "Ho Hey" while he was at it.
And if that's not cool enough, the YouTube video shows JD working the looping pedal like a pro, pounding on the cajon drum, and singing along with his own pre-recorded backing vocals at the same time. (Our favorite parts: pretty much every time he pushes up his glasses, the look he gives right after he coughs into his arm, and let's not forget the Pikachu pillow hanging out in the background.)
