Boy Comes out on Facebook, Mom Writes Touching Response

Missouri teen comes out on Facebook, mom's response letter goes viral

Coming out sure ain't easy. But having one awesomely supportive (and witty) mom certainly helps matters.

When Zach McClain of Union, Mo., came out on Facebook as bisexual last week, we bet he was more than a little nervous. And, let's face it, scared. What he may not have anticipated, though, was that his mom would catch wind of the whole thing before he even had the chance to tell her, himself. And she would seriously upstage him with her touching and hilarious response letter in the process.

Michelle Conway McClain's handwritten letter to her son—which she tacked to his bedroom door before leaving for work—read:

Zach,

I was surprised by your Facebook post where you came out. I want you to know that I love you unconditionally.

I love you with my actions, not just my words. I’m so proud of you. You are the bravest person I know. I’ll fight for you always. Your sexual orientation does not define you.

You are still the boy who forever won my heart. The only thing that concerns me is the number of empty soda cups and tea bottles in your room. Throw them away before ants come inside.

'I love you always - Mom

Yep, turns out Zach's got one pretty cool mom. (And a potentially disturbing ant problem in his room.) But the world would have been none-the-wiser had Michelle not taken a photo of the note and posted it to her own Facebook wall. Thousands of likes and shares later, it's made its way onto countless websites in the last few days—including Have a Gay Day's Facebook page, where its validity came into question by a few skeptical commentators.

Responding to the cynics, Michelle wrote in a comment:

This note is not fake. I wrote it to my son on the morning of 8/30/13 when I read on Facebook before work that he came out as bisexual. And I meant every word. I'm so proud of him!

Looks to us like Zach's coming out couldn't have gone any better.
