Do Men Start Getting Pregnancy Symptoms When the Wife Is Pregnant?

Like their pregnant partners, men can experience a host of physical and emotional symptoms as they anticipate fatherhood, says Elinor Bashe, a clinical psychologist from Highland Park, New Jersey. This phenomenon is known as Couvade syndrome, whose name stems from the terms “incubate” or “hatch” and refers to a man experiencing a sympathetic pregnancy, explains Bashe. “From nausea to weight gain, men can and often do embark on their own journey as their wives progress through pregnancy,” she says, adding, “Excitement and stress go hand-in-hand with pregnancy.” Bashe explains that men also can find themselves gaining weight because of changes in their expectant partner's diet, or from an increase in the stress hormone cortisol, which affects weight.
