Can I Get a Pedicure While Pregnant?

While there is typically no harm in treating yourself to a pedicure while pregnant, you’ll want to take certain precautions, says Dr. Shannon Clark, an obstetrician/gynecologist and associate professor of maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. “Manicures and pedicures are considered safe during pregnancy as long as the manicurist uses nail tools that have been cleaned,” Clark says. Because your immune system is naturally suppressed when you’re pregnant, your chance of contracting an infection is greater. Clark recommends taking your own nail supplies to the salon to reduce the risk. She also advises pregnant women to avoid acrylic and shellac manicures, which both contain potentially harmful chemicals. In addition, be sure that the salon is well ventilated to avoid breathing in toxic fumes.
