Do Twins Produce an Earlier Positive Pregnancy Test?

Pregnancy tests work by detecting the amount of the hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG, in a woman's blood or urine. Early positive pregnancy tests can be but are not always a sign of twins, since hCG levels are typically higher in women who are carrying multiples, states Dr. Alyssa Dweck, an obstetrician and gynecologist with the Mount Kisco Medical Group in New York. "Twins might produce an earlier positive pregnancy test, but only because of the increased amount of hormones in a woman's body," she said. Higher hormone levels, therefore, will produce positive results sooner.
