When Can You Get Pregnant After a C-Section?

Although it is physically possible to get pregnant immediately after a C-section, it is best to wait at least 12 months before getting pregnant again, says Dr. Kecia Gaither, Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Brookdale University Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. The extra time allows your uterus to adequately heal. “If pregnancy occurs prior, you may be predisposed to the scar opening during subsequent labor,” says Gaither. Women who immediately get pregnant after a cesarean often deliver via a repeat C-section, she says.
