Teeth Cleaning During Pregnancy

Many women experience oral sensitivity during pregnancy because hormones may promote gum overgrowth, which includes reddened, inflamed, bulky gums, explains Dr. Kecia Gaither, Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Brookdale University Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. "It is important that should this occur, you see your dentist, not only for proper cleaning of the teeth, but removal of the excess gum overgrowth that may be indicated," says Gaither. If morning sickness affects your ability to brush, switch to a bland toothpaste and use a mouthwash to protect your teeth.
