How Much Weight Gain is Healthy During Pregnancy?

For a woman at a healthy weight before pregnancy, the average weight gain should be approximately 30 pounds, observes Michigan based OB-GYN Donna Harrison. Women who are over their ideal body weight should gain less, and women who are significantly under their ideal body weight should gain slightly more, according to Harrison.

If you are concerned about losing weight after delivery, breastfeeding is the ideal way to shed weight. It provides the added benefit of giving perfect nutrition to your baby, as well as protecting the child from infections, Harrison notes.
