Family plans vary, but when it comes to spacing out kids, research shows it's better not to have them too close together. It's best, says Dr. Jean Twenge, author of The Impatient Woman's Guide to Getting Pregnant, for both you and your baby to wait at least 18 months before giving baby No. 2 a go—which makes the ideal age gap between kids at least 2 years and 3 months.
Why wait? "[It] cuts down on pregnancy complications, low birth weight, and other issues," says Twenge. "If you're breast-feeding, it also gives you enough time to wean and maybe even have a few months where you're not pregnant or breast-feeding."
