Toddler Talk: Apple Pie Play Dough

We love making our own play dough at home. It's easy, inexpensive and safe. Best of all, I almost always have all of the necessary ingredients. I've played around a bit with "scented" play dough, and came up with this yummy-smelling apple pie play dough! It's perfect for this time of year, when apples are in season and the smell of cinnamon and sugar makes you go weak in the knees.

Supplies:

1 cup water

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 cup flour

1/3 cup salt

1 heaping tablespoon cream of tartar

1 tablespoon apple pie spice

red food coloring

medium sauce pan

cutting board

metal spoon

airtight container

Directions:

1. In a medium sauce pan, combine all of the ingredients, except for the food coloring. Stir the mixture over medium heat until it comes together, about 3 to 4 minutes. (Don't worry, the mixture gets chunky first, then smoothes into a nice, round ball.)

2. Put the ball of dough on a cutting board and flatten it a bit to cool. Once it's cool enough to touch, add a few drops of red food coloring to the dough. Using a metal spoon, turn and knead the dough until it's bright, apple red.

3. When it's cool, let your toddler have a ball with this fun, fall activity. Use cups, spoons, cookie cutters and other kitchen gadgets to play with the dough. They will love it!

4. Store the apple pie play dough in an airtight container. It will last several weeks!
